The Money Museum’s new temporary exhibition, titled “The Legacy of the Golden Train—The Rebirth of Hungarian Currency,” has opened. Marking the 80th anniversary of the modern forint, the exhibition recalls a unique chapter in Hungarian monetary history that carries messages relevant to this day.

Dr. Levente Sipos-Tompa, Vice President of the Hungarian National Bank, delivered a speech at the ceremonial opening on July 31. As part of the program, a roundtable discussion was also held, featuring Zsigmond Járai, former Governor of the Hungarian National Bank, and Dr. Levente Kovács, Secretary General of the Hungarian Banking Association.

The discussion focused on the history of the Gold Train, its message—which remains relevant to this day—and the subsequent rehabilitation of the central bank officials who participated in the rescue of the gold reserves and their family members.

Our temporary exhibition highlights the importance of preserving national wealth, taking responsibility, and rebuilding after the war through the history of the Hungarian National Bank’s “Golden Train.” The exhibition features 80 selected artifacts, rarely seen documents, personal stories, and spectacular installations that help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the key moments in the birth and eight-decade history of the modern forint.

The opening day was memorable in several ways: in addition to the launch of the new temporary exhibition, we also welcomed the Money Museum’s 500,000th visitor on this day.
