Our Permanent Exhibition

The Path of Money

The permanent exhibition of the Money Museum, which can be visited free of charge, is organised into five thematic spaces, or “sections”, each representing one of the five core functions of money. This structure helps visitors gain a deeper understanding of the nature of money and its role in both the economy and everyday life. In addition to the artefacts on display, each space features a range of interactive experiences designed to introduce visitors to the fascinating world of money in an engaging way. After exploring the five sections, visitors can further expand their knowledge through additional content on the history of money, the functions of central banks, the world of investment, and numismatics.

Money Helps Us Evaluate Things – First section

Marten pelts, commodity money, cocoa beans, tea bricks, cowrie shells – did you know that these items were once used as a form of currency in the early history of money? In this exhibition space, visitors can explore the value-measuring function of money. We use money countless times every day to assess value and make comparisons, which form the foundation of our financial decisions. Visitors can also try this concept for themselves through an interactive experience, in which the goal is to exchange goods without using money. Success depends on accurately determining the value ratio between the items being traded.
Money Helps Us Achieve Our Goals – Second Section

Money Helps Us Achieve Our Goals – Second Section

St. Stephen's silver denarius, Charles Robert's gold forint, Kossuth's banknote. We await you with a numismatic collection containing more than 1,000 pieces, which contains the most significant memorabilia of Hungarian monetary history from the founding of the state to the present day. If you are more determined, you can also learn why the form of money has changed over the centuries, and even review the long process of transformation. You can learn about the security features of the banknotes used today and even see their smallest details magnified many times over.
The Key to Money Is Trust – Third Section

The Key to Money Is Trust – Third Section

In this exhibition space, you will arrive in the modern era of money. The history of money is inextricably linked to the history of banks and banking families. The same is true of the establishment and operation of central banks, since their fundamental role today is to provide invisible security. You can learn about the more than 100-year history of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. You can try out the pneumatic tube mail system and peek inside the headquarters. With the help of the monetary policy model, you can understand why changes in the base rate can directly affect our everyday lives.
Money Opens Doors to the Wider World – Fourth Section

Money Opens Doors to the Wider World – Fourth Section

We invite you to discover world currencies! You can learn about world currencies from different eras, world trade routes, centers, financial crises, and speculation. Through the stock market game, you can gain insight into the often incomprehensible and exciting world of stock exchanges. You will also have the opportunity to write down your thoughts on the money of the future. The model of online shopping illustrates the processes that take place invisibly in the background. Cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology: our globalizing world shows us the changing role of money in our everyday lives in many ways.
Money Provides Security – Fifth Section

Money Provides Security – Fifth Section

Our last stop presents the function of money as a means of accumulation and reserve. Sooner or later, everyone experiences that we can prepare for future expenses in the present. Money also dazzles us in its role as a treasure, presenting the many forms and interpretations of value. Real gold bars are treasures that you can hold and lift yourself. But the exhibition also draws attention to the spiritual form of values: we present Hungarian inventions, explorers, Nobel Prize winners, Olympians, and world-famous Hungarians of whom we are justifiably proud.
