Rare foreign stamps in the Stamp Museum’s collection
The stamp set out to conquer the world from Britain in 1840, following a comprehensive postal reform, and it had a brilliant career in the world of communication and messaging for almost 150 years. However, not only did it perform the functions mentioned above, but a new hobby, stamp collecting, also emerged with the appearance of the stamp.
The rarer a stamp, the more intriguing its story is for stamp collectors and layman alike. There are several unique stamps from the classic era of many of the world’s stamp issuers that deserve attention not only for their rarity, but also for the associated stories.
When stamps or stamp collecting comes up in conversation, you’re almost certain to hear about the famous Blue Mauritius, the British Guiana 1 cent or even the Hawaiian Missionary stamps, which are probably the world’s best-known philately stars.
The collection of the Stamp Museum includes not only Hungarian specialities, but also a range of foreign rarities. We invite you on a journey around the world in space and time to discover the legends of these unique stars of the stamp world, and to get a glimpse of exclusive moments in the story of stamps and stamp collecting.
