A kicsi görög állam trónjára a bajor Ottót hívták, aki három évtizeden át uralkodott, őt követte a dániai I. György.

Váltója a lepta lett, amelynek jelentése: pici. A Görög Nemzeti Bank 1841-től működik. Az ország 1868-ban csatlakozott a Latin Éremunióhoz, és igazította a drachma értékét a francia frankhoz.

Greece

The Greeks were the first in the Ottoman Empire’s European territories to gain independence by 1830, with the support of Great Britain, France and Russia. Otto of Bavaria was called to the throne of the small Greek state and reigned for three decades, followed by George I of Denmark. In the meantime, the country continued to expand to the north and to the islands of the Aegean Sea. Even though the Kingdom of Greece was not directly affected by the “Great Eastern Crisis” of 1877-78, its representatives attended the Congress of Berlin.

The first modern-day Greek coins were minted in the same place where, according to certain experts, the craft was born more than 2,500 years ago: on the island of Aegina, near Athens. The phoenix was the first currency of the Greek state after gaining its independence, and was replaced by drachma as of 1833, which means a handful. Phoenix was subdivided into lepta, which means small. The National Bank of Greece was established in 1841. The country joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1868 and aligned the value of the drachma with the French franc.
