A leva váltója a sztotinka, amelynek jelentése: század.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria was extremely exposed to the Ottoman Empire due to its geographical proximity to Istanbul, and could rely on the Russian Tsar’s Balkan ambitions as the only hope of gaining independence. At the Congress of Berlin, the superpowers divided the then semi-autonomous country into two, and only the Treaty of Bucharest concluded in 1886 recognised the unification of Bulgaria. Ferdinand I, with German and French ancestry became the first Tsar of the state and reigned until the end of World War I.

The Principality of Bulgaria issued circulation coins as of 1881. The notion of the National Bank of Bulgaria was initiated as early as 1878 with the help of the Russian military administration, and was established in 1879.Lev, the name of the Bulgarian currency, refers to the lion, which is also the country’s historical heraldic animal. The subunit of the lev is called stotinka, which means one hundredth.
